Hello again folks. Our meeting next week is a ‘can’t miss’ event for 2018.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 17th - 7:00 PM at the WELLSPRING CENTRE, 2545 SIXTH LINE in OAKVILLE

Before I get to this month’s guest speakers, I do have to mention that “It’s that time of the year again”.
Every year, we ask our members to make a contribution towards our Support Group donation to Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House.

As you know, our meetings are free and Wellspring does not charge us – not for use of their beautiful facility nor for our monthly coffee and cookies.
This is our way to give a little back. So please come prepared to put your hand in your pocket and your money in the Wellspring donation jar.

We want to repeat what we did last year and collect $500 or more to buy a wreath in our name for “Light Up Wellspring” (more on that next month).
Please give as generously as you can.

Now, for the main event. Do these comments sound familiar?

“We need a reliable test to tell whether this cancer is slow growing and safe or is likely to become aggressive and life threatening”
“ I have PC. Is there a better way to tell if my son is likely to get it too?”

Dr. Danny Vesprini and Justin Lorentz will talk about the biology of prostate cancer and, in particular, the genetic risk factors of developing the disease, and how knowledge of this can help at all aspects of prostate cancer management, screening, treatment and prevention. They will use the work (both clinical and research) being done in their Male Oncology Research & Education (MORE) program as an example of how to personalize cancer care.

We are so fortunate to have these world class experts agree to share their time with us. If you want to know what the future is going to look like, this is your chance. Please take advantage of it.

Dr. Vesprini is a Radiation Oncologist specializing in Prostate and Breast Cancer at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre. He is one of the Principle Investigators of the Sunnybrook Active Surveillance Program. He is also the Principle Investigator of several ongoing clinical trials that focus on integrating new technologies into prostate and breast cancer treatment including real-time MR guided stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (MR-SABR)

Justin Lorentz is a Certified Cancer Genetic Counsellor at the same Centre. He is the Lead of the Male Oncology Research and Education (MORE) Program which focuses on men that have developed or are at a high risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer such as men with a strong family history of prostate cancer, men with a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation and men of Caribbean/Western African ancestry. .

As you can see, these men are not just researchers but are active in many aspects of PC. What a great chance to ask you questions!

Walter
