Our next meeting is Wednesday August 21st at Wellspring, 7 pm as usual, 2545
Sixth Line in Oakville.

 

The topic most requested for all support group meetings and the talk best
attended at these meetings is anything to do with 

sexuality after prostate cancer treatment.

 

Given the location of the prostate, it is not surprising that surgery or
radiation can have serious physical side effects;

and given the mechanism of ADT therapy, it's not surprising that it too will
seriously impact a man's sexuality.

 

Sexuality is defined as "the way people experience and express themselves
sexually. This involves biological, erotic, physical, emotional, social, or
spiritual feelings and behaviors". So it is not just physical and it
involves the couple, not just the man.

 

This is just the lead-in to introducing our guest speaker for August 21st.

 

Kim Hartsburg-Lang is a registered nurse in the Barrie Urology Group. Kim
has won awards for nursing excellence and has been involved in the
development of both male and female sexual health programs providing
counselling and education to these patients.

 

Kim will address each type of treatment for prostate cancer, how it can
potentially impact on sexuality, and what might be done to mitigate that
impact. Penile rehabilitation after surgery will be included.   

She will talk about the emotional impacts of prostate cancer and suggest
ways to maintain intimacy in this new situation.

 

I hope that you and your spouse or partner will be able to attend this
