Last month I highlighted our new Support Group sponsor, Astellas Pharma
Canada.

 

This month, our guest speaker will be Jennifer Kitchen, Patient Access
Manager - Ontario, for Astellas Pharma.

 

Jennifer's presentation will help us understand the drug approval and access
process in Canada and Ontario.

This is really important for all men who are on, or may be on in the future,
some form of drug therapy such as hormones (ADT) or the other newer prostate
cancer drugs.

 

We read about FDA approvals and Health Canada approvals. We get surveys from
Prostate Cancer Canada asking for patient input to the pan-Canadian Oncology
Drug Review process. How does all this work and come together to get new PC
drugs into general use?

 

Even if it's approved, is a new drug covered under the Ontario Drug Benefit
Plan? If not, what is it going to cost?

What is the Exceptional Access Program and how can that help? What about
Clinical Trials? What about generic versions?

 

Astellas Pharma Canada is the Canadian distributor for Xtandi (enzalutamide)
but this is NOT a promotion session for this drug nor is it a technical
session on how these drugs work. It is general education for us on approvals
and access for the PC drugs which are now coming down the pipeline at an
ever increasing rate. This should equip you to ask better questions when you
next visit your doctor or oncologist.
