Donald Trump MD (not the the president), a much respected oncologist at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute,  wrote a series of articles about vitamin D3 for the PAACT newsletter in recent years. The last of them was here:

In the article he says:

My recommendations are:
• Measure your vitamin D (25[OH] D3 ) level • Take supplemental vitamin D (D3 ) to get your 25(OH) D3 level > 32 ng/ml • Monitor every 3-6 months while you are adjusting your dose (it takes 3 months for a given dose to “equilibrate”) =====================================================
