L to R: President of Lung Cancer Canada Dr. Paul Wheatley-Price, MP Len Webber, MP Bill Casey, Leader of the Green Party Elizabeth May, President of CCSN Jackie Manthorne, Myeloma Canada representative Robin Sully, CARP Ottawa chapter President Rick Baker

CCSN hosted We Are emPOWERED to Fight Cancer, June 11 on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Cancer impacts older Canadians disproportionately, with 9 in 10 Canadians with cancer being over 50 years of age. Jackie noted the progress that the cancer survivor community has seen over recent years in terms of improvements in screening, care, and treatments, including the new immunotherapies. Everyone applauded the many lung cancer survivors present at the event who are still with us due to new therapies. However, more investments from the federal government to the provinces are needed to support provinces in delivering quality cancer care and treatments to the 1 in 2 Canadians who will be diagnosed with cancer in the future.

A room filled with MPPs and cancer community representatives engaging in discussions.

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) returned to Queen’s Park for its fourth All-party cancer caucus meeting on May 30, 2019. In this session, CCSN invited the Lymphedema Association of Ontario (LAO) to continue discussions on cancer rehabilitation and share with MPPs one of the important and often unacknowledged side effects of cancer treatments: lymphedema.

Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines Putting Thousands of Women at Risk

The new breast cancer screening guidelines released by the Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care are dangerous, and thousands of Canadian women will die if they are not revised. They ignore expert advice and current data, ignore the importance of early detection of breast cancer, advise against breast self-exams, and expect women to make important health decisions based on inaccurate information.
These guidelines will lead to thousands of lives lost.

New resources to engage patients and the public in clinical trials
Clinical trials help to shape the future of medicine. We believe it’s important for patients and the public to be aware of and engaged with clinical trials. Clinical Trials Ontario, a leading not-for-profit in the clinical trials community, has collaborated with patients, patient groups, health charities, and others to launch new online tools to do just that. Merck Canada is launching a campaign to help raise public awareness about immuno-oncology and the impact it can have on Canadians. Merck is looking for a few people living with cancer, who have undergone IO treatment, to be featured in the campaign who would be willing to publicly share their experience with immuno-oncology. The successful candidates should also have a hobby/talent they would be willing to develop with the help of a coach/mentor. Examples of hobbies could include - but are not limited to - cooking, painting, playing an instrument, playing hockey, dancing etc.

**Please note the campaign will NOT promote or mention any specific medication. The purpose is to raise awareness about immuno-oncology in general, as an emerging, additional pillar in cancer care.

Deadline is Friday, July 5th, 2019.
