Lung cancer survivor, John Peachey and his wife and caregiver, Kimm Peachey speaking at the reception

CCSN's morning reception in the legislative dining room at Queen’s Park on November 7, 2019 was attended by nearly 100 patients, caregivers, survivors, cancer patient groups, MPPs, including three ministers and several staffers, and others. The theme of the reception was the new and exciting tumour agnostic treatments, but more on that later.

First we want to tell you how this reception became an extraordinary event due to two very special people, one of whom was a guest, the other a Member of the Provincial Parliament (MPP).

Left to Right: CCSN President and CEO, Jackie Manthorne, lung cancer survivor John Peachey, his wife and caregiver Kimm and two children, Michael and Sarah

CCSN’s guest speaker was John Peachey, a metastatic lung cancer survivor, accompanied by his wife and caregiver Kimm and his two children, Michael and Sarah, all from Burlington.

In 2013, John was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer that had metastasized to his brain, bones and liver. He was very ill and did not expect to live for long.

However, treatments, including several different chemotherapy drugs plus bone strengthening medication, kept him alive.

About six months ago, he was given a tumour agnostic treatment that has worked well for him. John ended his address by stating, “I have noticed a dramatic lifestyle change. I am regaining my strength, I feel like I have my life back, and I am able to enjoy my family and friends.”

Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby and Chief Government Whip

The second special speaker was Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby and Chief Government Whip.

MPP Coe had sponsored our reception, and he spoke from the heart when he announced at the reception that he was a cancer survivor, and that he had not disclosed this to anyone at Queen’s Park before. MPP Coe then made an inspiring statement in the House that afternoon where he again announced that he was a cancer survivor. We were very moved that MPP Coe felt empowered to be open about having had cancer.

Studies on gaps in cancer rehabilitation services for survivors show that it is a nationwide problem, which is why Jackie Manthorne, CCSN‘s President & CEO and Alex Wyatt, CCSN’s Public Policy Coordinator, travelled across the country to Alberta to host CCSN’s second All-party Cancer Caucus meeting in Edmonton on October 29 on the topic of lymphedema. Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive inflammatory disease commonly caused by cancer treatments that damage the lymphatic system.

Once the hype from black Friday, and cyber Monday has settled - comes the first day of the giving season, otherwise known as GivingTuesday. The day is dedicated to encouraging people to donate funds, volunteer time to non-profits and charities across the country, informing the public about the importance of giving back to communities, and how collective generosity can have a positive impact across the country, and around the world. In other words, GivingTuesday is all about helping power missions!

What do you know about radiology?

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN), in partnership with Bayer Radiology, would like to hear from you about a topic that affects so many Canadians affected by cancer. Despite being such a common part of the cancer journey, discussions around diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT scans, ultrasounds, etc.) are almost non-existent and there are some important details you might not be aware of that could have impact your health outcome. Please take a few minutes to participate in our quick survey; your responses will help us better understand knowledge gaps so that we can work to address myths and ensure that you have all the information you need about diagnostic imaging. Meet CCSN’s Partnership & Fundraising Manager

  _____

Earlier this month, CCSN welcomed Owen Brady, our new Partnership & Fundraising Manger. Having multiple years of experience working in the non-profit sector, Owen brings a wealth of expertise in fundraising, partnership management, and community engagement to his role. Owen fully understands the importance of communities and businesses coming together to power non-profit organizations in fulfilling their mission, and it’s a belief he holds close to his heart.

Owen accredits his combined experience of working in the private and non-profit sector, to strengthening his belief in the power of corporate social responsibility, and more importantly - how corporations across the country can help change the future of cancer survivorship. Owen’s knowledge of what drives companies to give back to communities and support causes, has enabled him to build successful partnerships with socially engaged businesses – and his ability to build relationships with individuals both online and in person - gives him a unique perspective on how to support CCSN’s mission of creating a better future for Canadians affected by cancer.

Owen has an Honours Bachelor of Public Relations from the University of Ottawa, and a Diploma of Public Relations and Communications from Algonquin College. When he isn’t working, Owen enjoys spending time with his family, playing with his daughter, cycling, playing soccer, and reading.
Owen will be leading CCSN’s partnership and fundraising initiatives, and he looks forward to connecting with CCSN donors and partners. If you would like to learn more about how you can help support CCSN with its mission and vision, contact Owen Brady at <mailto:partnerships at survivornet.ca> partnerships at survivornet.ca
