Hi all:

See below for the PCCN Oakville/Mississauga e-newsletter.

Of particular note is the CTV interview with a man whose GP did NOT do a PSA test. 2 years later the patient had a PSA level of 35 with aggressive PCa.

This is absolutely infuriating!! The patient mentions advocating on your own behalf & says the decision to do or not do the PSA test is NOT the doctor’s, it is yours!!

Take care,

Glen

September was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

In Milton, Walter arranged for a flag raising ceremony with the Mayor, a representative from PCC, and several local members of our Support Group, with our wives.

Chris Watson was interviewed on CTV News on the value of PSA testing https://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1792187

This was in conjunction with PCC’s publicity blitz on the importance of early detection

September was also when PCC announced the recipients of their latest ‘Discovery Grants’ – some interesting and exciting work being done

Cancer News at Oakville Hospital

“The Cancer Clinic Leadership team has successfully recruited two new medical Oncologists. Dr. Michael Herman and Dr. Katen Ghate will contribute to the further development of our systemic therapy cancer care services and the expansion of the treatment of patients with solid tumour disease. To support the anticipated volumes associated with the new physician resources the Cancer Clinic has also recruited additional nursing and clerical staff members and will be welcoming additional pharmacy and phlebotomy resources in early fall. A newly created Drug Navigator role has also been established to enhance support for patients and physician related access to restricted therapies. The recruitment of a Director for the Cancer Clinic is also underway”.

Prostate Cancer Pathways – a free webcast of an event taking place in Detroit on October 12th https://www.ustoo.org/PDFs/Pathways_Events_2019.pdf

The Truth About Surgery for Prostate Cancer

This Australian article (attached above) tells it like it is and should be required reading for any man looking at surgery for his PC.

This is NOT saying “don’t have surgery” but it IS saying “be realistic about expectations”.

ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology) held its annual meeting in September

One excerpt caught my eye. That being a suggestion that adding ADT to salvage radiation (after surgery) may not be necessary for everyone.

https://www.medpagetoday.com/meetingcoverage/astro/82181?fbclid=IwAR02mJDXQtITjNcUwhr8slQVN2fNecF00gUsua-6H0L52iL3iiGGJwQKz5o

“Prostate cancer patients undergoing salvage radiotherapy with the lowest prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels derived no survival benefit and may be harmed by the addition of hormonal therapy”

"We now know there's a certain group of men who do benefit from the combination of hormones plus radiation for a PSA recurrence after surgery, but it's still not everybody."

For those new to our group, a reminder that these on-line sessions on coping with ADT treatments are continuing monthly
