HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
happy-new-year-banner_thumb[8][1]
Our first meeting of the new year is next Wednesday January 15th.
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Jackie Bender who works in the Cancer
Rehabilitation and Survivorship Program at the Princess Margaret Cancer
Centre in Toronto.
Most of you will have heard of Movember and some of you will be aware of the
TrueNth program <https://truenth.ca/> which has been running for a few
years now. One element of TrueNth is the Peer Navigation program which is
what Dr. Bender will describe for us.
Peer Navigation is a free program developed by healthcare professionals and
patients at Princess Margaret Cancer Agency and the BC Cancer Agency, funded
by Movember, that connects men with prostate cancer or their
partner/caregivers with a peer navigator who has been trained to support
them through their prostate cancer journey. Patients and caregivers are
matched online with a peer navigator, and can communicate with that person
one-on-one through the program website, by telephone or in person.
We know that not all men are attracted to Support Groups or are comfortable
talking in a group situation. Interacting one-on-one with a trained Peer
Navigator is an excellent alternative. Even for those of us who do attend a
Support Group, access to a confidential Peer Navigator can serve as a nice
complement to that and can be valuable in difficult or sensitive situations.
Navigators are also trained to connect patients with relevant resources in
their community - such as our Support Group.
Once we learn more about this program, it might be something we can use
ourselves, it might be an option for the friend or family member who keeps
avoiding your invitation to attend our group meetings, or you may wish to
take steps to become a peer navigator yourself. This would be a good meeting
to bring along your spouse since the Navigator program is available for
caregivers also.
Dr Bender's presentation may only take up half of our meeting time, leaving
room to welcome new guests and catch up with others.
I hope to see a large turnout to kick off the new year. Our average
attendance last year was 24 and we welcomed 22 new men over the course of
the year.
Walter
