On Tuesday February 4th, World Cancer Day will be marking its 20th anniversary. Since the global awareness day’s inception on February 4, 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris, World Cancer Day has encouraged the global community to promote research, improve services for patients, and prevent cancer.

Over the past two decades, World Cancer Day has helped raise awareness, encourage individuals to take action against cancer, and has contributed to creating a world that has an increased understanding of a critical health issue that affects one-in-two Canadians.

This year’s World Cancer Day theme of <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=8e03691fcd&e=2e211ff547> I can and I will, is to be viewed from the individual's perspective, and is all about you, and your commitment to take action against cancer. I can and I will, is aimed at promoting a healthier and brighter future for everyone, and asks individuals to change cancer by coming together and raising their collective voice.

This year’s theme features a call-to-action that asks participants to share their plans for the day on social media, and encourages participants to:

*	Get informed
*	Act smarter
*	Get screened
*	Speak up
*	Create change
*	Love harder

On Tuesday February 4, join CCSN in speaking out and standing up for a cancer-free world at our annual open house. Come by our office anytime between 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., to meet CCSN staff and volunteers, and learn more about the work CCSN conducts on behalf of cancer patients and survivors. Plenty of Bridgehead coffee and refreshments will be on hand for your enjoyment, and additional information regarding speakers will be announced in the near future. Make sure to reserve your spot for our open house by <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=a32ee9fa64&e=2e211ff547> clicking here.

If you can't make it to CCSN's annual open house, there are multiple ways for you to still get involved in the day! Ideas include, sharing a post on social media that outlines your support of World Cancer Day, or attending one of the numerous events being held across the country. Alex Wyatt, CCSN Public Policy Coordinator, Jackie Manthorne, CCSN President & CEO and Deputy Premier and Health MInister Christine Elliott

CCSN President & CEO Jackie Manthorne and CCSN Public Policy Coordinator Alex Wyatt recently had two very productive meetings in Toronto with the Honourable Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Rana Shamoon, Director of Health Policy in the Office of the Premier.

CCSN’s fruitful and engaging discussion with Minister Elliott covered several topics, including how to improve patient access and financial coverage for take-home cancer drugs; the future of the lung cancer screening pilot projects in Ontario; and the necessity of improving post-treatment or rehabilitative support for more cancer survivors than ever before.

CCSN’s discussion with Rana Shamoon covered some of the same topics, including take-home cancer drugs, the need to introduce effective lung cancer screening to reduce the number of patients diagnosed at stages 3 or 4, and how cancer treatment is changing due to an increasing number of immunotherapy and tumour agnostic medications.

CCSN looks forward to continuing to work with Minister Elliott and Ms. Shamoon to improve healthcare and cancer care for Ontarians.

CCSN Partners with On the Tip of the Toes Foundation

CCSN has recently partnered with On the Tip of the Toes Foundation, a non-profit that assists cancer patients and survivors with regaining their well-being, by leading them on therapeutic expeditions across some of the most picturesque landscapes in our country.

Since 1996, the foundation has run over 50 expeditions that have taken more than 500 youth and young adults on outdoor adventures, that are specifically designed for patients and survivors who are currently under treatment, or are dealing with long-term side affects of treatment.

The foundation runs multiple expeditions annually, and each adventure provides participants with the opportunity for them to express and share their journey with cancer, with peers who’ve had similar shared experiences. The expeditions are free of charge for participants, and provide an environment for cancer patients and survivors to regain awareness of their strengths, develop a sense of pride, and build their confidence – all while having fun exploring nature!

Depending on the time of year, therapeutic adventure specialists take participants on canoeing, sea kayaking, hiking, sailing, white water rafting, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, or skiing excursions – that enable adventure seekers to team build, while exploring various terrains across the country.

CCSN looks forward to collaborating with this important resource for cancer patients and survivors in the future. L to R: Representative for MPP Bhutila Karpoche, Damien Waddell legislative assistant to MPP France Gélinas, Representative for MPP Laura Mae Lindo, Representative for MPP Mike Schreiner, MPP Daisy Wai, MPP Andrea Khanjin, CCSN public policy coordinator Alex Wyatt, and cancer survivor Vinesha Ramasamy.

CCSN held its fifth All-party Cancer Caucus at Queen’s Park in Toronto on December 5, 2019. Once again, we provided MPPs and their staff information on an issue related to rehabilitation for cancer survivors – sporadic and chronic pain. Alexander Wyatt, CCSN’s Public Policy Coordinator, and Owen Brady, CCSN’s Partnerships and Fundraising Manager, hosted the event which included presentations from both the medical and patient perspective.

Bone cancer survivor Vinesha Ramasamy - pictured with her mother Jeyamalini Rita Ramasamy, addressed the Ontario All-Party Cancer Caucus on her experience as a survivor, and how dealing with chronic pain and side effects from cancer treatments, impacted her day-to-day life as both a patient, and survivor.

We welcomed medical experts Jennifer Jones, PhD, who spoke on cancer survivorship and rehabilitation and Dr. David Flamer, who provided information on cancer pain management. They were followed by patients Vinesha Ramasamy, a bone cancer survivor who spoke about her chronic pain journey, and John Peachey, a stage 4 lung cancer survivor who was unable to attend, but asked that his experience with pain medications be read.

For the first time and with the permission of the speakers, CCSN was able to video-record the Caucus. We are pleased to share the videos with you.

We look forward to our Sixth All-Party Cancer Caucus at Queen’s Park on May 28, 2020.

Complete our short survey about radiology and be entered in a draw for five Amazon gift cards!

Thank you to those who completed the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) survey about radiology, a topic that affects so many Canadians diagnosed with cancer. Despite being such a common part of the cancer journey, discussions around diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT scans, ultrasounds, etc.) are almost non-existent and there are some important details you might not be aware of that could have impact your health outcome. Please take a few minutes to participate in our quick survey; your responses will help us better understand knowledge gaps so that we can work to address myths and ensure that you have all the information you need about diagnostic imaging.

To complete the survey, go to <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=20290a2b5d&e=2e211ff547> https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ccsnudis

In Canada, an estimated 1350 Canadian women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019. An estimated 410 will die from it.

For this reason, it’s recommended to women aged between 21 to 69, to have a pap test every 3 years and consult their health provider about the HPV vaccine to know whether it’s right for them.

Find out more about this cancer on CCSN’s, website, including risk factors, prevention treatment, and resources: <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=3e0889cf60&e=2e211ff547> http://bit.ly/35vui3q

Obituary, Rita Myers, 1944-2019

  <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/318d4e052fdd9593317146113/images/d7516215-1cc5-4dc5-96e7-512c809c917c.jpg>

Rita Myers, CCSN’s friend and volunteer, passed away suddenly after a brief battle with metastatic breast cancer, which had spread to the liver, on November 14, 2019 at the age of 75. She is survived by husband Tony, children Gene, Graham, and Meghan, her sister June, children’s spouses Carrie, Jennifer, and James, and grandchildren William, Rebecca, Essen, Hollis, and Marcos.

Rita was deeply spiritual, a fierce defender of her family, a mentor to many and a friend to many more in the diverse spheres of her life and community. As a counsellor, Rita was passionately committed to healing, promoting mental health well-being, and helping others with their most difficult life transitions and personal traumas. Even as the Ottawa Civic Hospital’s staff explained to Rita her limited medical options, Rita’s final message to them was to thank them for their professionalism, their humanity, and their compassion and kindness—a testament to the person she was: filled with gratitude and love for others.

While awake and lucid, Rita was able to hear and acknowledge from family members how much she was loved, how important she was, and how badly she will be missed. Testimony to her importance to so many was clear from the crowded funeral home visitation and the overflowing church at her funeral. Those who wish can make donations to Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO), a cause which was central to Rita’s professional endeavours.

A grief counsellor in her life, we wish she had been there to help us with our own grief when she died. She is missed.

Obituary, Vanessa Compton, 2019

  <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/318d4e052fdd9593317146113/images/70553d86-5e02-4da2-b0f8-6f51faadee53.jpg>

Vanessa Compton, our friend, colleague and one of eight founders of CCSN, passed away in Perth, Ontario, after a short battle with later stage pancreatic cancer.

Vanessa wanted to celebrate her life with family and friends while still living to feel “surrounded by love,” so everyone was invited to the Perth & Smith Fall’s District Hospital for tea, coffee, and snacks. Since Vanessa loved flowers, guests brought wild flowers and cut flowers from their gardens. Vanessa died a few days later.

After her death, another celebration of Vanessa’s life was held at St. Paul’s United Church Fellowship Hall on September 28, with Vanessa’s labyrinth set up for walks and reflection. This labyrinth was portable, and fit into the trunk of Vanessa’s car, and Vanessa freely shared its spiritual and healing powers wherever needed.

Vanessa had an incredible ability to create an aesthetic – be it a birthday outfit, with a brilliant pink boa, a potato stamp Christmas card, a delicate piece of jewellery, or a knitted woolen Minotaur. Some of her keepsakes to honour her creativity were on display at her celebration of life, and those attending were asked to bring a meaningful memory of Vanessa to share with others.

She was an artist and a catalyst for creative thought and activity, and the world is dimmer without her in our midst.
