October 2020 Update
Cancer Still Waiting...
"It’s extremely anxiety provoking, and you realize how decisions are being made to focus resources and attention on one viral outbreak at the expense of everything else, including life-saving cancer surgery and treatment, and you have to wonder about which of the two are more pressing and urgent for the medical community to focus on. My greatest fear has been if there were any complications, where would I go to seek help?"
A breast, kidney and pancreatic cancer patient from Ontario.

When the pandemic was first declared in mid-March, cancer screening services were temporarily suspended in order to direct resources to COVID-19 patients. As CCSN reported in our cross-national survey this summer, 23 percent of cancer patients, 33 percent of caregivers, and 34 percent of pre-diagnosis patients had a routine cancer screening cancelled or rescheduled because of COVID-19. These services are essential for ensuring that patients can have access to timely treatments and prevent their cancer from developing or worsening.

There has also been a <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=657bd305c0&e=2e211ff547> drop in referrals from primary care physicians during the first few months of the pandemic, which means that many pre-diagnosis patients have not been able to see a specialist at all.

As radiology departments work to manage the growing number of patients on wait lists, they have had to prioritize those with the most urgent cases. However, this does mean that lower priority patients who continue to wait for treatment or screening may experience a progression of their cancer in the interim. In particular, <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=04b38effb4&e=2e211ff547> “there is zero (0) capacity for new P4 scans [which are for those who are low priority and can wait up to 60 days] because of the waitlists that existed before COVID-19.” Additionally, efforts to increase productivity back up to pre-pandemic levels have required additional resources in order to ensure that physical distancing and disinfection protocols are followed.
As many provinces are entering a second wave of COVID-19, there is the possibility that there will be an increase in hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients. However, access to cancer diagnostic services and treatments must remain a priority during any pandemic.

What Men Told Us: CCSN Prostate Cancer Survey Report
For Canadian men, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer, with <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=85f8b3fe1f&e=2e211ff547> 22,900 new cases in 2019 alone. Since this disease affects such a large number of people, CCSN conducted a national prostate cancer survey. The purpose of this survey was to help the prostate cancer community better understand the journey that prostate cancer patients, caregivers and survivors experience during their transition from diagnosis, to treatment, to follow-up and finally to survivorship. 137 responses were received, including 59 from prostate cancer patients in active treatment, 64 prostate cancer survivors, and 14 caregivers.
<https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=bca014fef8&e=2e211ff547>
The CCSN Survey Report captured three overarching themes that resonated consistently throughout the survey results. These were:
Assistance dealing with treatment-induced side effects
The first and most frequent theme to emerge was the respondents’ perceived lack of assistance dealing with treatment-induced side effects, specifically, as it relates to their sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence.
Provision of supportive care services
Patients highlighted the need for supportive care to handle treatment-induced side effects, including accurate information regarding the management of the disease, and gaining access to emotional support or psychosocial services to help address or alleviate the fears, anxiety or distress surrounding prostate cancer therapies.
Timely access to treatment and information on the management of the disease, including side effects
Men felt they were not provided with enough information about prostate cancer treatment options from their healthcare professionals, while prostate cancer clinicians assumed patients had acquired enough information. Men felt ill at ease dealing with the treatment options, or rushed through their treatments, and felt unprepared for the severity and duration of treatment side effects.
<https://mcusercontent.com/318d4e052fdd9593317146113/images/ba2e63c3-1931-4377-8344-e0c4949972c0.png>
In conclusion, the CCSN Prostate Cancer Survey Report suggests respondents had unmet information and supportive care needs, including physical, psychological, sexual and the healthcare system itself. Providing men with supportive care services can bring them out of a sense of isolation and loneliness and provide them with the tools to speak about their disease with ease and confidence. They can then share information and exchange ideas and tips with others going through the journey.
All stakeholders must come together to support the prostate cancer patient and his caregiver in a meaningful and productive manner. The hope is that the CCSN Prostate Cancer Survey Report will serve as the impetus in helping to achieve this goal.

Provincial Elections:
British Columbia & Saskatchewan
Do you live in British Columbia or Saskatchewan? <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=a142317a37&e=2e211ff547> Check out CCSN's election question to the official parties and candidates!
Election Day is October 24th for British Columbians with Saskatchewanians voting just two days later on October 26th.
We understand that COVID-19 is a major concern for many voters. This year, CCSN's question for candidates is based on our recent Leger survey which revealed that the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a crisis in essential cancer care across the country.
More than half (54%) of Canadian cancer patients, caregivers and those awaiting confirmation of a cancer diagnosis report having had appointments, tests and treatment postponed and cancelled.
It comes as no surprise that a recent survey found <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=4cfe7673f3&e=2e211ff547> more than 6 in 10 Saskatchewanians stated that issues related to COVID-19 will be important in determining their vote in the provincial election. Among those who stated COVID-19 issues will be important to their vote choice, 53% mentioned health care as their top issue.
<https://mcusercontent.com/318d4e052fdd9593317146113/images/61cc1ae4-86b3-47d9-ac49-bad3b907666e.jpeg>
If you have concerns about access to healthcare and cancer care as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, take a look at our election question and see how the candidates in your riding responded.
Cancer can’t be cancelled or postponed. The delay and cancellation of cancer care due to COVID-19 has triggered another public health crisis. Cancer care and diagnosis must continue during any public health crisis affecting Canadians to save lives.
If elected, how will your government provide the explicit inclusion of essential cancer care in a second or third wave of COVID-19 and in all crisis and pandemic planning in the future?
We will be updating our website as we receive responses from parties and their candidates. Patients Say Cancer Can't Wait
I was concerned in the beginning as I was going to the hospital, and was worried about catching COVID - 19. I was very nervous. A Stage 4 breast cancer survivor from Manitoba.
I understand the need to cancel and delay non-urgent treatments and appointments, but it is very stressful. I worry that my spots of concern
won't be caught in time. I'm also very, very grateful that my surgeries were complete just prior to covid-19 so they didn't get postponed. A Stage 3 infiltrative basal cell carcinoma from Ontario.
