Next General Meeting, Tuesday, September 14th, 2021 – 7 p.m.
We are honoured to welcome Dr. Patrick Cheung to our next meeting. His topic is “The Emerging Role of SABR/SBRT in the Treatment of Metastatic Prostate Cancer”.
Dr. Cheung is a Radiation Oncologist at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, specializing in genitourinary and lung cancers.  He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto.
His academic interests include evaluating the role of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in the setting of metastatic cancer.  He has experience in leading local and national clinical trials in Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Cheung has worked closely with Dr. Andrew Loblaw in perfecting SBRT. Google “SBRT Sunnybrook” to get a feel for the importance of this work. One article in Sunnybrook’s HealthMatters publication sums it up very well: Radiation has long been a critical tool in the fight against prostate cancer. But sometimes, less is more. Doctors at Sunnybrook have pioneered a way to deliver fewer radiation treatments to tumours while ‘packing a greater punch.’
Our member Paul Henshall took part in one of the earliest successful clinical trials of SBRT. Where my traditional External Beam Radiation Therapy back in 2000 required THIRTY-EIGHT trips down to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Paul made only FIVE trips to Sunnybrook.
