Message from the Co-Chairs

As we approach the end of 2022, we would like to reflect on this year as well as the past three years which coincided with our term as Co-Chairs at Prostate Cancer Support Toronto.

On the 1st of January 2020, we took over as Co-Chairs of Prostate Cancer Canada Network, Toronto. Little did we know that the next three years would turn out the way they did.

Early in the first quarter of 2020 we found out that Prostate Cancer Canada was taken over by the Canadian Cancer Society. This left all the national prostate cancer support groups outside of British Columbia without an umbrella organization to support them. This also required us to change our name and logo, and reincorporate (We are incorporated as a non-profit corporation). So, we became Prostate Cancer Support Toronto.

A few months later Covid-19 took over the world with it’s related restrictions and lockdowns forcing us to stop our in-person meetings at the Valleyview Residence. We switched to online meetings using the Zoom platform within a month. That service turned out to work quite well for most of our members and is still sustaining our support efforts for men with prostate cancer and their partners. Unfortunately, for various reasons, some of our in-person attendees are not able to or are reluctant to join us on Zoom. On the flip side, we now have people joining our meetings from across Ontario and Canada as well as from faraway places like Australia. Our meetings remain on Zoom, but are now trying to wait out Covid so that we can have some in-person meetings again. We are currently also investigating hybrid meetings. We continue to provide information and to support men and their families, caregivers and friends through our phone help line and email through which men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer can contact us. Our website is updated regularly.

We also had to suspend hospital and clinic visits because of Covid. Our volunteers have returned to Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre as well as the Prostate Centre at the North York General Hospital. We are still waiting for clearance from The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre before our volunteers can go there.

Within the last year or so, a new organization called Prostate Cancer Support Canada was created by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of British Columbia. This has taken the place of Prostate Cancer Canada and is actively supporting all the national prostate cancer support groups. Our group is now part of this new organization and we changed our logo again to reflect this. A national council has been set up with representatives from each province. The council works between the various national support groups and Prostate Cancer Support Canada.

As 2022 draws to a close, we will reach the end of our term as Co-Chairs at the end of December. We would like to thank our fellow board members, regular attendees at our Zoom support meetings as well as our extended membership for their support these past three years. We are also thankful for the cooperation we received from all the Ontario Support Group leaders and members as well as Prostate Cancer Support Canada.

We would like to introduce you to our incoming Co-Chairs –Ari Katz and Denis Farbstein will lead the group for the next three years starting in January 2023. Both have been members of our Board of Directors for many years and are intimately involved with helping manage the group’s activities. We are sure all of you will join us in giving them the same great support that you have given both of us these last three years.

On behalf of Prostate Cancer Support Toronto, we would like to wish you and your loved ones the Very Best of the Holiday Season and A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2023.

John Roth and Keith Braganza
