Mon May 16 08:16:02 EDT 2022

Hi all:
See below for the weekly e-newsletter from HopeSpring, Hope Notes.
Of particular interest is that our next support group meeting on 24 May 22 will be a HYBRID format.
It will be held in person at Rockway Community Centre 1405 King St. East in Kitchener at 1900 hrs as well as via ZOOM for those who may wish to join remotely via ZOOM.
As part of a “welcome back” to an in person meeting, we have purchased Black T- shirts with the new PCSG tie logo for those who attend in person.
Plan to attend the meeting on the 24th and bring your smart phone or tablet/laptop with the ZOOM app loaded if you wish to sign in via ZOOM at Rockway.
Since COVID is still a reality and some members may have reduced immunity, strict precautions will be in effect for the meeting attendees. Face masks, hand sanitizer, and Lysol wipes will be provided and are to be used.

Take care & stay well.

Glen

MAY 20TH IS #EYEPATCHDAY
Having regular eye examinations could save your life! Routine eye tests can lead to early detection of ocular melanoma and many other health issues. However, statistics show that we are not visiting the optometrist as frequently as we should.
Make a commitment to booking an eye exam this month!
Share your Eye Patch photo on social media and tag @saveyourskinfdn #OcumelCanada

Perform a monthly self-examination, or ‘Skin Check’ continue here for guides and references

The Cancer Stories Project Overview

Get a Chance to Tell Your Story! Natalie Kononenko guides you through the storytelling process.

Tell your cancer story, your successes, your challenges, your unique experiences, how you overcame your toughest challenges...

Receive a recorded copy of your interview, if you decide, your story could potentially assist in changing cancer care in the future.
But why is it so important to tell YOUR story?
• Stories draw upon our universal need for connection; in some fundamental sense we need stories.
• One of the most powerful ways of inspiring others is by using the one tool you have that no one else has - your life story. Your individual experience of the world is the most valuable asset you possess.
• Telling your story - with all its challenges, mistakes, failures, pain, setbacks as well as its joys, successes and victories - says something about what it means to be human.

From Our Cancer Care Counsellors:  Meditation is Exercise for the Brain

Many people have this idea that meditation involves sitting down and doing nothing. But this is a misconception. Meditation is an active process, an exercise for the brain. The aim of the exercise is to become consciously aware of your thoughts and feelings without judging them. Meditation is not about trying to turn off your thoughts and feelings, but instead allowing them to come and go without resistance. Meditation is a skill; similar to any skill, it takes practice to get comfortable with. But overtime and with consistent practice, meditation can bring extraordinary benefits to your daily life. Read on here

HopeSpring offers MEDITATION sessions monthly Wednesday and Thursday with Tammy and Christine. Registration and additional info here

Lifestyle

Have you found a terrific recipe or eating tip? Please share by sending it to marketing at hopespring.ca.

Barbecuing at home is a perfect way to relax, celebrate holidays, and spend time with family and friends. But before you fire up the grill, plan a healthy menu.
Many meats traditionally served at barbecues, such as beef, hot dogs and sausage, have been shown to increase the risk of some types of cancer. And, side dishes such as pasta and potato salads often include unwanted fat and calories, leading to unwanted weight gain.
So, what should go on your plate? Continue reading here
