| Can online support groups address psychological morbidity of cancer patients? An artificial intelligence based investigation of prostate cancer trajectories
Prostate cancer support groups are a powerful tool for addressing the various needs of prostate cancer patients. With the pandemic, the shift to online support groups was swift. Despite the overall positive outlook of support groups from members, both in person and online, they are yet to be formally prescribed as a method for addressing the needs of prostate cancer patients. Part of this may be due to the little empirical research done on the benefits of such groups.
In this study, Artificial Intelligence was used to examine the psychological morbidity of prostate cancer patients from 10 different international online support groups based on the conversations and activities that took place in the groups. Various statistical methods were used for analysis.
Prostate cancer patients were divided into 4 groups: diagnosis, treatment, side effects, and recurrence. It was found that most joined groups during the treatment phase and that the groups varied in terms of their emotional burden of cancer. The study concluded that patients that joined groups pre-treatment had improved emotions. Additional findings show that participating in groups long term led to better emotional well-being, an indication of a decrease in psychological morbidity. The results help to validate the importance of online support groups and provide further evidence for the formal use of such groups.
