STUDYING THE THEATRE: Research, Training and Creation


Over the past twenty years, the field of theatre studies and theatre
practice   at  the  university (1)  has  been steadily  growing  and
diversifying.   Programmes have multiplied and  made  room  for  new
practices,   often  multidisciplinary,  dealing  with   theory   and
creation,   training  and  pedagogy.   Another  equally  significant
development has been the marked increase in the number of university
troupes and theatre events.

The  International  University Theatre Association  (IUTA)  will  be
analyzing this reality at its second World Conference.  The theme of
this scientific gathering, "Studying the Theatre: Research, Training
and  Creation",  will bring together university scholars,  creators,
practitioners and educators from around the world to scrutinize  the
close  connections  which  have developed between  universities  and
theatre  in the areas of theoretical research, creation and training
(of practitioners, theorists, audiences and educators).

In  order  fully to represent the diversity of university practices,
the  Conference  will  accept two types of scholarly  presentations:
demonstration workshops and papers.  The former will include a  more
important  practical component than the latter.   All  presentations
will be organized around three major categories:

     -   Theatre  and training:  This category focuses on theatrical
     training,  highlighting the specific role  of  universities  in
     training  educators,  practitioners,  amateurs  and  theorists.
     Thus,  the teaching and didactics of theatre will receive  full
     attention.

     -   Creative practices:  Universities are increasingly the site
     of original research and creation activities based on rigourous
     critical  approaches.  The Conference will devote  considerable
     attention to typical experiences of this kind.

     -   Theory  and  theoretical research:  Universities  are  also
     involved  in  extending our knowledge  of  the  theatre.   This
     category  provides an opportunity to assess  the  strength  and
     variety   of  university  explorations  of  theatre   and   its
     manifestations.

Proposals for presentations should be sent by fax, e-mail or regular
mail  to  the  address below.  They should not exceed one  page  and
should  include  the  author's  name,  address,  phone  number   and
institutional affiliation, as well as the category under  which  the
presentation would fall.  Proposals must be received by December 15,
1996.

Depuis une vingtaine d'ann=E9es, le champ des =E9tudes et de la pratique
th=E9=E2trales =E0 l'Universit=E9 (1) conna=EEt  une progression  constante=
 et=20
une formidable diversification. Les programmes se sont multipli=E9s et
ouverts  =E0  de  nouvelles  pratiques,  souvent  multidisciplinaires,
abordant  autant  la th=E9orie que la cr=E9ation, la  formation  que  la
p=E9dagogie.  Ce  d=E9veloppement se double d'un  autre  ph=E9nom=E8ne  tou=
t
aussi  marquant:  l'accroissement consid=E9rable des  troupes  et  des
rencontres th=E9=E2trales universitaires.

L'Association internationale du th=E9=E2tre =E0 l'Universit=E9 (AITU) enten=
d
consacrer son deuxi=E8me congr=E8s mondial =E0 l'analyse de cette r=E9alit=
=E9.
Le  th=E8me  de  cette  rencontre scientifique, "=C9tudier  le  th=E9=E2tre=
:
Recherche,  formation et cr=E9ation", permettra =E0 des chercheurs,  des
cr=E9ateurs,  des praticiens et des formateurs du milieu universitaire
issus  du  monde entier de r=E9fl=E9chir ensemble sur les liens  =E9troits
qui  unissent d=E9sormais l'Universit=E9 et le th=E9=E2tre, que ce soit dan=
s
le  domaine  de  la  recherche th=E9orique, de la cr=E9ation  ou  de  la
formation   (de  praticiens,  de  th=E9oriciens,  d'amateurs   ou   de
formateurs).

Afin   de   bien  rendre  compte  de  la  diversit=E9  des   pratiques
universitaires,  le  Congr=E8s  acceptera deux  types  d'interventions
savantes:   les   ateliers-d=E9monstrations  et  les   communications.
L'ensemble  de  ces  interventions sera regroup=E9  autour  des  trois
grands axes suivants:

     -  Th=E9=E2tre  et  formation: Cet axe est consacr=E9 =E0 la  formatio=
n
     th=E9=E2trale   et  aborde  la  question  du  r=F4le  sp=E9cifique   d=
e
     l'Universit=E9 dans la formation des formateurs et des praticiens
     comme  dans  celle des amateurs de th=E9=E2tre et des  th=E9oriciens.
     Une  large  place  sera ainsi accord=E9e =E0  la  didactique  et  =E0
     l'enseignement du th=E9=E2tre.

     -  Pratiques cr=E9atrices: De plus en plus, l'Universit=E9  est  un
     lieu  de  recherche originale et de cr=E9ation  fond=E9es  sur  des
     d=E9marches rigoureuses et critiques. Le Congr=E8s entend faire  un
     large =E9cho =E0 ces exp=E9riences caract=E9ristiques.

     - Th=E9orie et recherche th=E9orique: L'Universit=E9 est =E9galement l=
e
     lieu  o=F9  l'on  produit  de  nouvelles  connaissances  sur   le
     ph=E9nom=E8ne th=E9=E2tral. Cet axe permettra de mesurer la vigueur  e=
t
     la  diversit=E9 de la r=E9flexion universitaire sur le  th=E9=E2tre  e=
t
     ses manifestations.

Les  projets  de communication ne doivent pas exc=E9der  une  page  et
doivent  pr=E9ciser  le nom de l'auteur, son adresse  (et  toutes  ses
coordonn=E9es),  son affiliation institutionnelle et l'axe  auquel  il
d=E9sire s'inscrire. La date limite de r=E9ception des propositions  est
fix=E9e au 15 d=E9cembre 1996.

ESTUDIAR EL TEATRO : investigaci=F3n, formaci=F3n y creaci=F3n.

Desde  hace  veinte  a=F1os, el campo de  estudios  y  de  pr=E1ctica
teatrales  en la universidad (3), conoce una progresi=F3n constante=20
y una formidable diversificaci=F3n.Los programas se han multiplica-
do y  abierto  a  nuevas pr=E1cticas, a  menudo multidisciplinarias,
abordando  tanto la teor=EDa como la creaci=F3n, la  formaci=F3n  y  la
pedagog=EDa.  Este  desarrollo est=E1 aunado a otro fen=F3meno  tambi=E9n
remarcable: el crecimiento considerable de las compa=F1=EDas y de los
encuentros teatrales universitarios.

La Asociaci=F3n internacional de teatro universitario (AITU) piensa
consagrar  su  segundo  congreso  mundial  al  an=E1lisis  de  esta
realidad.  El  tema  de  este encuentro cient=EDfico,  Estudiar  el
teatro:   investigaci=F3n,  formaci=F3n   y   creaci=F3n,   reunir=E1   a
investigadores,  creadores, practicantes y formadores  del  medio
universitario  que  provienen del mundo entero  y  les  permitir=E1
reflexionar juntos sobre los v=EDnculos estrechos que  unen  en  lo
sucesivo la universidad y el teatro, ya sea en el dominio  de  la
investigaci=F3n  te=F3rica , de la creaci=F3n o  de  la  formaci=F3n  (de
practicantes, de te=F3ricos, de aficionados o de formadores).

Con  el  fin  de  rendir  cuentas de la diversidad  de  pr=E1cticas
univeraitarias, el Congreso aceptar=E1 dos tipos de  intervenciones
doctas:  los  talleres-demostraciones y las  comunicaciones.  Los
primeros contendr=E1n una dimensi=F3n pr=E1ctica m=E1s importante que las
segundas.  El  conjunto  de  estas  intervenciones  se   agrupar=E1
alrededor de los tres grandes ejes siguientes :

     -  Teatro  y  formaci=F3n  : este eje  est=E1  consagrado  a  la
     formaci=F3n teatral y aborda la cuesti=F3n del rol espec=EDfico de
     la  universidad en la formaci=F3n de los formadores y  de  los
     practicantes como en la de los aficionados al teatro y la de
     los  te=F3ricos.  Se  acordar=E1 tambi=E9n  un  gran  lugar  a  la
     did=E1ctica y a la ense=F1anza del teatro.
    =20
     - Pr=E1cticas de creaci=F3n : cada vez m=E1s, la universidad es un
     lugar  de  investigaci=F3n original y de creaci=F3n fundadas  en
     procesos  rigurosos y cr=EDticos. El Congreso piensa hacer  un
     gran eco en estas experiencias caracter=EDsticas.
    =20
     - Teor=EDa e investigaci=F3n te=F3rica : tambi=E9n la universidad es
     el  lugar  donde se producen nuevos conocimientos  sobre  el
     fen=F3meno  teatral.  Este  eje permitir=E1  medir  la  fuerza y=20
     la diversidad de la reflexi=F3n universitaria sobre el  teatro=20
     y sus manifestaciones.


Los   proyectos   de   comunicaci=F3n  deben   ser   enviados   por
telecopiadora  (fax), correo electr=F3nico o correo  regular  a  la
direcci=F3n  escrita m=E1s abajo. Los proyectos no deben exceder  una
p=E1gina y tienen que precisar el nombre del autor, su direcci=F3n (y
todos  sus  datos personales), su afiliaci=F3n institucional  y  la
secci=F3n  en  la  cual  desea  inscribirse.  La  fecha  l=EDmite  de
recepci=F3n de las  propuestas es el 15 de diciembre de 1996.
