>RATIONALE FOR THE CONFERENCE
>Although we can all be encouraged by the growing importance of evaluating
>and reflecting on the drama process, when compared to most other
>disciplines, drama research is still in its infancy. This conference,
>follows the successful April 1995 event held in Exeter and it aims to
>strengthen and extend the work that was started then. Drama and Theatre
>Education research is being furthered by a growing body of researchers from
>all aspects of the field who are supporting each other's work and taking
>strength from networking that brings the realisation that they are not
>alone. It is hoped that the community of researchers present in Exeter will
>include teachers, theatre practitioners, writers, community arts workers
>such as those working in Theatre for Development, as well as academics and
>full-time researchers.
>
>One of the most encouraging aspects of the last conference was the wide
>range of international representation, (people from thirty-three countries)
>and it is hoped that we may achieve this level of world-wide support again.
>
>
>FOCUS OF THE CONFERENCE
>The conference period has been extended by one day to allow more flexibility
>in programming. The overwhelming priority will be to provide as many
>opportunities as possible for researchers to present accounts of their work
>to fellow researchers and those interested in research. There will be
>specific sessions that deal with research approaches and appropriate
>methodologies. Methodology sessions will partly be delivered by inviting
>presenters to contribute to 'how I went about my research' discussions where
>the focus will be exclusively on how to do research.
>
>FORMAT OF THE CONFERENCE
>The majority of the conference time will be devoted to the presentation and
>discussion of papers in seminars and symposia. This pattern will be
>relieved by round table discussions, workshops and poster sessions. A
>number of keynote addresses will also be included. There will be time for
>visits to the city of Exeter and beyond and for the informal discussion that
>always proves so rewarding at such events. An outline programme will be
>sent to participants in advance of the conference at which point they will
>be asked to state preferences for the sessions they would like to attend. A
>detailed programme including abstracts of each presentation will be
>available at registration
