At its recent conference in St.Catharine's, the Association for
Canadian Theatre Research/L'Association de la Recherche Theatrale au Canada
awarded its ninth annual Heather McCallum Scholarships to Lisa Coulthard and
Shemina Keshvani, two rising young scholars from the University of Toronto's
Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama. The $650.00 award to Lisa Coulthard
will provide her financial assistance to attend the prestigious summer
session of the School of Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth College in
Hanover, New Hampshire, where Lisa's studies will include exploration into
the relationship between beauty and violence in the performing arts. Shemina
Keshvani receives $350.00 towards her travel expenses in India for a
comparative examination of Indian and Canadian post-colonial theatre and
film, with particular application to the developing South Asian theatre in
Canada. Both winners plan articles and conference papers on their findings.
Also awarded at the St.Catharine's conference were Honorary
Memberships in the Association for Canadian Theatre Research/ L'Association
de la Recherche Theatrale au Canada. These memberships, given "for
distinguished service to theatre in Canada," went to the founding directors
of Toronto's collective Nightwood Theatre: Cynthia Grant, Kim Renders, Mary
Vingoe, and Maureen White, and to Christopher Newton, Artistic Director of
the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Heather McCallum award monies are drawn from the interest earned
annually from an Endowment Fund created in 1987 to honour Heather McCallum,
who established, and, for 25 years, headed the Theatre Section of the
Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library. She is the recent author of The
Directory of Canadian Theatre Archives (Halifax 1992).
Tax-deductible donations to the Heather McCallum Endowment Fund are
welcomed and may be sent to Anne Nothof, Treasurer of ACTR/ARTC, at 90
Beauvista Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta, T8A 3X1. For information regarding
grant applications and/or criteria, please write to Paula Sperdakos,
