CALL FOR PAPERS

Talk Theatre 1996:
Vancouver Theatre Conference

Talk Theatre 1996 will be held in Vancouver from October 18-20,
1996. A three-day discussion, debate and entertainment event, Talk
Theatre 1996 is designed to ponder the state of live theatre in
Vancouver. The floor is open to theatre practitioners, scholars,
critics--and, of course, audiences.

In the Spotlight:

On Sunday, 20 October, 1996, a colloquium entitled "In the Spotlight"
will address the theme "Competition or Cooperation: Charting a
Course for Canadian Theatre."An investigation into the perils and
rewards of the competitive model central to much of Western art, In
the Spotlight welcomes papers on the above topic (and especially
encourages cross-disciplinary responses). We invite proposals which
consider production strategies (cooperative theatre ventures); funding
(the fight for dwindling grant monies); politics (who pays the piper?);
aesthetics (the persistence of theatre in popular culture); the role of the
critic (parasite or symbiote?); the "net" (the future impact of electronic
publishing)--or any other topic that addresses the above theme.
Proposals for traditional papers, performance papers, panels,
lecture-demonstrations, workshops, multi-media presentations, etc. in
the form of a 300-word abstract should be sent no later than May 15,
1996 to the address below. Presentations will be given a 20-minute
time limit, plus an additional 10 minutes for feedback. If your proposal
is accepted you will be notified by July 30, 1996.
