I have been contacted by Prof. Andrew Burstein of the Department of History at the University of Northern Iowa. He is writing a chapter on the early novels (Saratoga, 1824; Yorktown, 1826) of Eliza Lanesford (Foster) Cushing when she lived in Brighton, Massachusetts, prior to moving with her husband, sister, and mother to Montreal in 1838. (Her husband, Dr. Frederick Cushing, worked as a physician at the Emigrant Hospital in Montreal.) Cushing died in Montreal in 1886.

Prof. Burstein is attempting to locate the collected papers of Cushing or those of her sister Harriet Vaughan Cheney (with whom she edited The Snow Drop, the first monthly Canadian juvenile literary magazine 1847-53). He would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone with leads regarding the Foster/Cushing family prior to their move to Canada and can be contacted at andrew.burstein at uni.edu
