                                   CALL FOR PAPERS

                           Pre-, Post-, and Neo- Colonialisms:
                       Wole Soyinka and Contemporary Theatre
                                    October 19-21, 2001

The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto is
presenting an international conference, Pre-, Post-,
and Neo- Colonialisms: Wole Soyinka and Contemporary Theatre, October
19-21 2001.

The conference aims to bring together the best of African and world
dramatic scholarship, to debate issues of colonialism and
neo-colonialism in Africa and beyond, and to locate the intersection of
Soyinka’s dramatic and theoretical writings with
urgent debates in contemporary theatrical scholarship/practice. This
could include, but is not limited to:

· Canonization: formation and revision of canons; the place of Soyinka
in Western, African and world dramatic canons
· Identity: post-colonial, postmodern and post-structuralist issues of
identity in Western and African scholarship
· Language: Bilingualism in performance; use of Pidgin or Creole
languages; writing post-coloniality
· Performing Diaspora: interculturalism and performance
· Feminism / Womanism: debates on global feminism; woman as symbol in
post-colonial writing

All proposals should, however, contribute to a debate on the theoretical
and/or dramatic writings of Wole Soyinka.

Invited speakers include Tejumola Olaniyan, Martin Banham, Brian
Singleton, Don Rubin, Olakunle George, Molara
Ogundipe, James Gibbs, Ted Chamberlin, Yvonne Brewster, Laura Moss, Dapo
Adelugba, Helen Tiffin, and Gareth Griffiths,
Christopher Balme, Stephen Slemon and Abena Busia.

Papers should be 20-25 minutes in length. Selected proceedings will be
published.

Abstracts of 250 words for papers and workshops should reach the
convenors by March 15, 2001. Abstracts and inquiries
should be addressed to:
