Research Collaboration Workshop: Women in Theatre: The Maritime
Experience
Mount Saint Vincent University, March 19, 2005

Despite the identification in the early 1980s of significant gender inequality
within Canadian theatres, there are still many areas of concern for women in
theatre. In addition, there has been limited critical inquiry into topics related to
women in theatre, particularly as related to theatre in the Maritime Provinces,
despite the presence of women-focussed theatre groups and active professional
and amateur theatre communities in all three provinces.

On Saturday, March 19, 2005, Mount Saint Vincent University will host a one-
day workshop on the topic of Women in Theatre with special emphasis on
productions by theatre companies in the Maritime Provinces, and plays and
performances by playwrights and theatre practitioners whose work reflects the
diverse cultures of the region, or who are associated with the theatre community
of the region. Invited speakers include award-winning playwright Wendy Lill,
and Rebecca Burton and Denyse Lynde, representatives of the National
Committee on the Status of Women in Canadian Theatre.

The goal is to bring together theatre researchers and practitioners in the
Maritime Provinces to identify and clarify directions in research related to
women in theatre and to establish networks of practitioners and researchers with
similar interests in order to encourage researcher-practitioner collaboration and
close examination of the engagement of theory and practice.

Interested participants are asked to submit a brief description of their work (not
more than one page) associated with the topic of women in theatre as related to
the theatre of the Maritime Provinces. Topics may include, but are not limited to
                1. Status of women in theatre
                        a. Opportunities for women in theatre
                        b. Difficulties for women in theatre
                        c. Aging women in theatre
                2. Gender role performance
                        a. Performing female genders
                        b. Cross-gendering roles
                        c. Performing traditional gender roles for contemporary
                                   audiences
                3. Gendered direction and design
                        a. The practice and purpose of gendered direction and
                                    design
                        b. The value and purpose of all-female theatre
                        c. The politics, practice and marketability of feminist
                                   theatre

Descriptions of work (including work in process) that combines theory and
practice or identifies methods or opportunities for researcher-practitioner
collaboration are particularly encouraged. Please send submissions by e-mail to
Reina.Green at msvu.ca by January 9, 2005.
