M.F.A. Program in Directing

The Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa offers the only
bilingual Master of Fine Arts/Maîtrise en arts de la scène (MFA/MAS) in
Directing for the Theatre in the country. Founded in the fall of 2004, this
innovative new program allows students to benefit from the approaches to
directing found Canada¹s two principal theatrical cultures. During their
two-year course of study, our MFA students complete a rigorous practical and
theoretical training as directors of repertoire. Our program also aims to
cultivate our students¹ sense of aesthetic diversity, exposing them to
contrasting approaches to the director¹s art, from traditional text-based
production to devised and postdramatic performance.

 

Graduate level directing courses are given by Theatre Department Faculty
members who are award-winning, practicing artists, including Joël Beddows,
Peter Froehlich, Daniel Mroz and Kevin Orr.

 

Graduate level courses in dramaturgy and performance theory are given by
practicing dramaturges and scholars such as Dominique Lafon and Yana
Meerzon.

 

In addition to our own faculty, MFA students have the opportunity to work
alongside acclaimed professional directors. MFA students have served as
assistant directors to such artists as Richard Rose, Diana Leblanc and Peter
Hinton and have taken Master Classes with such internationally renowned
directors as Denis Marleau and David William. Furthermore, student directors
are provided with the services of professional actors from the
Ottawa/Gatineau area during their studio work.

 

In order to ensure our students high quality instruction we keep our
admission standards high and our student to teacher ration low. The MFA in
Directing accepts two students per year, and there are only four candidates
in the program at any given time. Due to the demanding nature of this
degree, the MFA in Directing can only be undertaken as a full time course of
study. Generous bursaries and teaching assistantships are provided for
students with appropriate academic and professional achievements.

Le Département de théâtre de l¹Université d¹Ottawa offre le seul programme
bilingue au Canada de Maîtrise en Arts de la scène (M.A.S.), un programme de
conservatoire en mise en scène.  Créé à l¹automne 2004, ce programme
novateur permet aux étudiants de recevoir une formation pratique rigoureuse
axée sur le répertoire, tout en approfondissant leurs connaissances des deux
traditions théâtrales principales du pays. Le programme encourage
l¹exploration esthétique en exposant les étudiants à diverses approches : la
production traditionnelle centrée sur le texte, la représentation dite «
postdramatique » ainsi que certaines formes de mise en scène spécifiques au
théâtre de création.

 

Les cours sont offerts par le personnel enseignant du Département de théâtre
qui sont aussi des praticiens reconnus et lauréats de nombreux prix,
notamment Joël Beddows, Peter Froehlich, Daniel Mroz et Kevin Orr, tandis
que les cours en dramaturgie et en théorie de l¹événement théâtral sont
offerts par des chercheures et conseillères dramaturgiques praticiennes,
telles que Dominique Lafon et Yana Meerzon.

 

De plus, les étudiants ont l¹opportunité de travailler avec d¹autres
metteurs en scène professionnels reconnus. Certains ont été assistants à la
mise en scène auprès d¹artistes tels que Richard Rose, Diana Leblanc et
Peter Hinton; d¹autres ont suivi des cours de maître animés par des metteurs
en scène de réputation internationale, dont Denis Marleau et David William.
Les « étudiants-metteurs en scène » bénéficient également de l¹expertise
d¹acteurs professionnels de la région d¹Ottawa-Gatineau pour compléter leurs
exercices pratiques.

 

Afin de garantir aux étudiants un enseignement de qualité, il s¹agit d¹un
programme contingenté: seulement deux candidats sont admis par année et le
programme se limite en tout temps à quatre étudiants. Seuls des étudiants à
temps plein seront admis et ces derniers ont la possibilité d¹obtenir des
bourses et des postes d¹assistanat.
