{ SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1}Creativity and Isolation

Owing to Canada’s substantial geography, its main theatrical
centres are often separated by considerable distances. These
distances often present a substantial barrier to theatre educators
and practitioners who wish to enhance their creative expression.
Despite Atlantic Canada’s seemingly small area, theatre
educators and practitioners in the region are often unable to
overcome these barriers. As a result, they are often unable to
experience innovative production trends directly or engage in
emerging theatrical discourses. Recognizing that this sense of
isolation, and its often detrimental effect on creativity, is not
particular to the Atlantic region, the Association of Atlantic
Theatre Educators and Practitioners (AATEP) invites proposals
from theatre educators and practitioners from across Canada to
participate in a panel discussion that addresses the topic of
Creativity and Isolation.

Themes to be explored might include, but are not limited to:

    – developing an audience for experimental work in an
area that does not have a history of experimentation or is
    artistically conservative

	– teaching newer works by report instead of direct
experience

	– finding creative inspiration

	– developing innovative production models when isolated
from resources

	– securing (external) funding to support creative research

	– keeping current within the discipline

	– developing a critical dialogue for one’s work

	– new play development without local developmental
dramaturgical resources

    – designing new pedagogical models within an academic
environment that does not recognize the discipline’s merit

	– the pitfalls or benefits of being a single-person department/
program

	– using technology to overcome geographic isolation

	– the dissemination of new work from an isolated area

Potential participants are asked to submit 1) a 200 – 250-word
proposal, outlining the topic to be addressed; and 2) a 50-word
biographical statement.

Please submit an electronic copy of the proposal by e-mail by
January 31, 2008. Completed papers should be approximately
10 minutes in length. Please send email proposals to
gdoran at upei.ca.
