Hello, and season's greetings,

This is somewhat old news now (see below), but I don't think it was posted on the listserv (my apologies if it was), and it is well worth sharing.

Cheers,

Rebecca

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Board of Directors, Producer Jim LeFrancois and Artistic Director David Oiye are pleased to announce that the company posted a $54,691 surplus in 2007. It was a year of continued growth for Canada’s premier Queer cultural institution, with most significant changes to operating revenues resulting from increases in box office. The company’s accumulated surplus sits at $189,203, as of June 30 2007. Buddies’ recent audit is noteworthy, as the 2007 financial statements show the company in a positive unrestricted position of $8,171 at the fiscal year-end (June 30, 2007) – this is the first time that this has been achieved in the company’s history. This fiscal goal was articulated through Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s work as a participating member of The Creative Trust’s Working Capital for the Arts programme (www.creativetrust.ca <http://www.creativetrust.ca/> ). In light of having achieved this goal, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre will receive a working capital award of $49,755 from The Creative Trust, to be used as a working capital reserve. “Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is one of the finest examples among our 21 participants of a company ready willing and able to put heart and soul into the hard work necessary to launch themselves on to a financially solid, artistically focused future.” –Jini Stolk, Executive Director, The Creative TrustJ. Paul Halferty was officially welcomed onto the Board of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre at the company’s Annual General Meeting on December 11, as was Naomi Campbell, who has graciously assumed the position of Board President. Campbell is a seasoned Producer and Artist, and replaces long-serving Director J.R. Tennyson (who is on temporary leave from the Board). Naomi Campbell has served as President of The Alexander Street Theatre Project (the facility-based arm of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s operations) since 2001. Oiye and LeFrancois are also pleased to announce plans addressing gender inequity in the company’s mainstage programming. A recent study on gender equity in Canadian theatre (the findings of the study were first released in October 2006, and the results are available online at http://www.pact.ca/act_GetFile.cfm?pdf=StudyHighlightsANDExecSummaryOct2006.pdf <http://www.pact.ca/act_GetFile.cfm?pdf=StudyHighlightsANDExecSummaryOct2006%2Epdf> ) highlighted the fact that women are still highly under-represented as directors and playwrights within the mainstage seasons at our country’s non-profit theatre sector. In fact, the statistics have made little to no improvement since 1982, when the last major study was facilitated. Looking specifically at the 2007-2008 mainstage seasons of Toronto’s facility-based non-profit theatres shows that women accounted for but 28% the directors and 22% of the playwrights employed that year. In planning for the next three-year cycle, the two have indicated that Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s 2009-2010 mainstage programming (excluding festivals) will be comprised entirely of projects initiated by women creators, that are in keeping with Buddies’ Queer mandate and pro-sexual aesthetic. The women-based season is the first part of the company’s plan, which also includes a commitment to gender equity in mainstage programming for all subsequent seasons at Canada’s Home for Queer Culture. <http://www.artsexy.ca> Buddies In Bad Times Theatre12 Alexander Street, Toronto, Ontario, CANADA M4Y 1B4admin 416-975-9130 box office 416-975-8555info at artsexy.ca www.artsexy.ca <http://www.artsexy.ca> ------ End of Forwarded Message
