A Singularity of Being put two more feathers in its cap this weekend. The winner of the 2009 Fringe New Play Contest was listed as an insider's pick on Sunday by Fringe President and Toronto Producer Derrick Chua ( They May Be Giants , thestar.com June 28, 2009), while at last night's Dora Mavor Moore Awards, director Ed Roy was recognized for excellence winning the award for best direction for Agokwe (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre) earlier this season. Roy’s two year collaboration with first-time playwright and recent Humber College graduate Waawaate Fobister as both director and dramaturge garnered 8 Dora nominations for Agokwe which swept last nights awards ceremony, winning the awards for best performance ( Waawaate Fobister ), best costumes (Erika Iserhoff), best lighting ( Kimberly Purtell ), best new play ( Waawaate Fobister ), & best production (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre).

Roy is bringing his golden touch to his current project, A Singularity of Being by T. Berto . Over the past five months Roy and Berto have been working dramaturgically, refining the script before four month’s of on-stage workshopping with a stellar company of actors including John Blackwood, Soo Garay, Elizabeth Saunders, David Tripp & Clinton Walker. “Ed has an innate understanding of theatrical storytelling and an intensity which he brings right into the minutiae of the work,” says Berto. “It requires an immense amount of trust to put your creation into the hands of a director/dramaturge, but working with Ed and this dedicated cast made this a rewarding process, that was always about the refinement of the work's characters. I'm extremely grateful to be working with this crew.”

Berto took the 2009 Fringe New Play Contest prize for the second time with A Singularity of Being . After months of development with this award winning company, the company hopes this play will make the leap from the Fringe to the Toronto mainstage.
