Arts is happy to offer an opportunity
to hear and meet H.S. Shivaprakash at the University of Toronto’s Robert Gill
Theatre on May 27.  Starting at 7pm, we
will present selected scenes from some of his plays; Shivaprakash will read
some of his poetry and talk about the current state of Indian drama. There will
be some time to mingle and meet as well. The evening’s proceedings will take
place in English.

 

H.S. Shivaprakash is one
of the leading poets and playwrights writing in Kannada,
with twelve plays, seven anthologies of poems, and several other books to his
credit. His works have been widely translated into English, Hindi,
Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. His plays have been performed in Kannada, Hindi, Manipuri
and Malayalam. He is currently Dean of the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
>From 1996 to 2000 he was the editor of Indian
Literature, the bimonthly journal of the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi. With
numerous awards bestowed upon his plays and writings, Shivaprakash is also a
well-known authority on Vachana literature, Bhakti movements of India, Sufi
and other mystic traditions.
