Early Modern Drama @ the Edge of Possibility

This joint session engages with the Congress theme: @ the edge / à la fine pointe and invites papers that reflect on how drama written in the early modern period might challenge boundaries related to the text itself, its performance, or the use of technology, and how such boundaries may encourage possibilities rather than enforce limitations. For example, when texts are fragmented and performance histories are limited, how can the unknown, the undocumented, be known or performed? Do digital archives help to fill the gaps in what is known, or do they emphasize what remains unknowable? When is a well-documented performance history a limitation? How can a history of non-performance be interpreted? When plays are no longer deemed suitable for performance, what boundaries do they cross? What possibilities exist in a play that is not performed? When is censorship a restriction and when does it encourage creativity? When is a production an adaptation? How might the boundary between the two be defined or challenged? What role does technology play in the distinction between the two? How do Web 2.0 technologies challenge ideas about audience, performance, and performance space? What possibilities does such technology offer?

Please send proposals of 300 words and a brief biography to reina.green at msvu.ca by December 21st.

Accepted presenter will be required to join either CATR/ACRT or CSRS/SCER.
