Theatre Journal
Special Issue

“(Trans)Indigenous Performance”

Call for Papers

Before contact and since, the Indigenous world was and remains a performative one. Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies are largely enacted, and relationships between Indigenous communities and nations have always been negotiated in large part through performance. In the current globalized world Indigenous communities continue to engage in performative exchange, and Indigenous performance practices and research methodologies, both traditional and contemporary, often model a progressive and bracingly cosmopolitan transnationalism.

In 2012 Chadwick Allen published Trans-Indigenous: Methodologies for Global Native Literary Studies. In 2013 he edited an issue of Studies in American Indian Literatures on Indigenous Performance. This issue of Theatre Journal proposes to bridge these works by bringing (trans)Indigenous methodologies to bear on global Native performance. Submissions are invited on any aspect of Nation-specific and explicitly trans-Indigenous performance practices. Submissions from Indigenous scholars who are from, or who are considering, a range of global locations and autochthonous cultures are particularly encouraged.

This special issue will be edited by Theatre Journal editor Ric Knowles. Submissions (6000-9000 words) should be e-mailed to managing editor Bob Kowkabany (doriclay at aol.com) no later than 14 February 2015.
