DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE
FACULTY OF FINE ARTS, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Limited-Term Appointment Position in Design for the Theatre

Concordia University's Department of Theatre in the Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for one limited-term appointment position in the area of Design for the Theatre at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor, effective August 1, 2017 to May 14, 2018.

Context
With over 4,000 students, faculty, and staff, the Faculty of Fine Arts is among the five largest visual and performing arts schools in North America. Montréal, our home, is exceptional: with 170,000 university students, a vibrant cultural scene, and the most affordable tuition in Canada, the city ranks among the top ten best destinations in the world for tertiary education. While supporting a significant Anglophone population, Montréal is the second largest French-speaking city after Paris. North America's number one choice for international events and festivals, Montréal was the first metropolis to be designated a UNESCO City of Design by the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity. Nestled in the heart of this pulsing city, embraced by a dynamic research university, the Faculty of Fine Arts benefits from extraordinary access to brilliant practitioners, thriving venues, cross-cultural perspectives, and an extensive network of outstanding facilities for research and production.

Faculty
Taking advantage of our place within the rich fabric of a research university and our long history as one of the premiere sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, the Faculty of Fine Arts is currently engaged in a transformative moment in which pedagogical, conceptual, theoretical, and material practices find resonance with a significant diversity of approaches. In our university community, we value equally those practices that embrace aesthetic activism, live performance, historical scholarship, technical experimentation, skills-based production, community fieldwork, as well as traditional and digital fabrication.

Department
The Department of Theatre offers three BFA Specializations to approximately 200 students: Performance Creation (PERC), Acting for the Theatre (ACTT), and Design for the Theatre (DFTT). The Specialization in Design for the Theatre program invites students to become actively involved in the complex process of conceiving, communicating and realizing the visual framework for theatrical works. Emphasis is placed on design as a highly creative discipline comprised of a number of specialties including set, costume, lighting and props design. Designers possess a firm grasp of the potential for each constituent part while understanding many other aspects of production. Through an involvement in the imaginative and technical aspects of the various streams of theatre design, group projects, and individual portfolio development, students in DFTT begin by understanding the history of theatre design and the cooperative nature of theatre work. They progress from exploring the essence of the design process to developing more refined insights and skills. Senior students work on advanced individual projects, with opportunities to design for departmental public performance projects, providing them with a rich understanding of the role designers play in contemporary theatre.

Position Description
Limited-term appointment positions are subject to budgetary approval and departmental or unit need. Individuals holding limited-term appointments may be reappointed given continued funding and need, as well as satisfactory job performance. Together, initial appointments and subsequent reappointments may not exceed a total of 36 months or span more than three consecutive years.

Responsibilities
During the initial appointment, the successful candidate will be expected to teach up to six undergraduate courses in the area of set, costume, properties or lighting design; and, in the case of a reappointment, up to seven courses in any subsequent year. Responsibilities will also include administrative duties including serving as the DFTT Academic Advisor and Area Coordinator, and advising student designers working on departmental public performance projects. This will involve attending weekly full-time faculty meetings, participation on the department's Public Performance Project Task Force Committee, and working in close coordination with the Director of Performance Production. Other duties will include organizing biannual portfolio reviews with students and faculty, as well as Portfolio Day open houses and interviews and tours with potential students.

Qualifications
An MFA and/or relevant professional theatre experience in design for the theatre is required. The ability to teach cross-disciplinary courses within the department would be considered an asset. Preferred candidates will demonstrate evidence of teaching and administrative experience within an academic environment. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in spoken and written French would also be considered an asset.

Application Requirements and Deadline
Applications should be submitted electronically to theatre at concordia.ca<mailto:theatre at concordia.ca> and consist of a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course syllabi and evaluations); and the names and contact information of three referees. Short-listed candidates with an MFA will be required to provide an attestation of terminal degree. Applications should reach the department on or before March 6, 2017.
