The Gatherings Partnership is seeking Research Assistants

Who We Are:

We are a multi-site partnership comprised of scholars across the territory commonly known as Canada with a shared interest in documenting and archiving the history of performance, widely construed, in this country. While each co-investigator on the project undertakes their own research, we are also developing a support network and service organization for related archival and artistic projects. More information about Gatherings can be found at https://gatheringspartnership.com<https://gatheringspartnership.com/>

What we’re looking for:

  * Amy Bowring (Dance Collection Danse) seeks assistance collecting data on postmodern choreographic works created and presented in St. John’s, NL. The research assistant will need to be based in St. John’s and will primarily be accessing the Neighbourhood Dance Works archives at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

  * Jenn Cole (Trent University) seeks assistance in creating an online exhibition on Nozhem Theatre and Indigenous Performance. The successful candidate may also be required to do some transcription.

  * Heather Fitzsimmons-Frey (Macewan University) seeks assistants able to research archives and youth volunteers at various Living History Museum sites, including Louisburg in Cape Breton, L’Anse Aux Meadows in Newfoundland and Labrador, Fort MacLeod in Lethbridge, and Ukranian Cultural Village in Vegreville. Candidates interested and able to visit these sites in person are especially encouraged to apply.

  * Kelsey Jacobson (Queen’s University) seeks someone to use social media archives to research audience responses. The successful candidate may also be called upon to conduct audience interviews and assist in manuscript preparation.

  * Stephen Johnson (University of Toronto Mississauga) is researching the first theatrical licensing laws in Canada, during the 1830s and 1840s. He seeks someone interested in the history of the relationship between performance and the law, and in urban history. Some of this research will be local to Toronto, but much can be done remotely, and includes a ‘deep dive’ into local bylaws.

  * Martin Julien (Sheridan College) seeks assistance in time-coding interviews with influential Canadian theatre practitioners.

  * Sasha Kovacs (University of Victoria) seeks someone to aid her in manuscript preparation for her biography on Pauline Johnson and to conduct archival research using historical newspaper databases.

  * Michael Wallace (Theatre Museum Canada) seeks assistance in organizing
and coordinating its “Legend Library” online series of interviews. Tasks might include creating consistent online descriptions and tags of new and existing video interview clips, and sharing the project with a wider audience by updating online communities and updating Google Ad information.

The number of hours will vary based on assignment. Pay will be commensurate with experience and will reflect the institutional standards set by the university.

The majority of this work can be done remotely, but there are also openings for research assistants who can be “on site”. Those sites include Toronto, Lethbridge, Victoria, Kingston, Halifax, Peterborough, Newfoundland, and Cape Breton.

If interested, please send a CV and a brief cover letter outlining your experience with or interest in editorial, transcription, or archival work to lisa.aikman at mail.utoronto.ca<mailto:lisa.aikman at mail.utoronto.ca> by Friday November 8. Please indicate in your email where you are currently located and which of the above-described projects most interests you.

The Gatherings Partnership is committed to fostering equity, access and inclusion. Applicants from all backgrounds, abilities, and identities are welcome. If you require accommodation during the application process, or if you have further questions please contact lisa.aikman at mail.utoronto.ca<mailto:lisa.aikman at mail.utoronto.ca>
