Jonathan is the co-founder of Playback Theatre, the author of Acts of Service: Spontaneity, Commitment, Tradition in the Nonscripted Theatre (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=6c5cd28b8d&e=fc4ea68507) , and the founder of the Centre for Playback Theatre, an international training organization. He holds a PhD (Honoris Causa) from the University of Kassel, Germany. Playback Theatre is a form of improvisational theatre in which audience members tell personal stories and watch them enacted on the spot by a group of performers.

In this keynote address, he will be citing experiences in Burundi and Nepal, as well as pointing the way to the work of some other playback practitioners in regions of conflict such as El Salvador, Lebanon, Egypt, and South Africa.

Dr. Cynthia E. Cohen is Director of the Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts at the International Center for Ethics, Justice, and Public Life at Brandeis University, where she initiated an undergraduate minor in Creativity, the Arts and Social Transformation. She is a member of the leadership circle of the global initiative IMPACT – Imagining Together: Platform for Arts, Culture and Conflict Transformation. Cindy has written extensively on the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of conflict transformation, including the chapters “Engaging with the Arts to Promote Coexistence (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=438e0b49c5&e=fc4ea68507) ” and “Creative Approaches to Reconciliation (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=adbdcc432c&e=fc4ea68507) ,”  and an on-line book Working with Integrity: A Guidebook for Peacebuilders Asking Ethical Questions (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=25414a8149&e=fc4ea68507) . She co-edited Acting Together: Performance and the Creative
Transformation of Conflict (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=00ece48119&e=fc4ea68507) , a two-volume anthology, and co-created the accompanying a documentary film and toolkit.

Before coming to Brandeis, Cindy founded and for ten years directed an arts- and community-based, anti-racist oral history center in the Boston area. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of New Hampshire, a Master’s in Urban Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a BA in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University.

Her keynote address will incorporate recent thinking provoked by submissions to a special issue of the International Journal of Transitional Justice. Focusing on Creative Approaches. Cindy is guest editor of that special issue, due to be available in the Spring of 2020.
These keynotes are part of the International Symposium on Listening, Performance and Conflict, taking place at Concordia’s Acts of Listening Lab (https://concordia.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=330d41f50b50ab02e89a150ac&id=b8846cbd3e&e=fc4ea68507) .

The symposium Listening, Performance, and Conflict explores the powers of listening in the context of a sample of performance methodologies used in regions of violent conflict as a means to facilitate mutual understanding. In particular, it explores the powers of listening in the context of playback theatre, headphones verbatim, oral history performance, and experimental socially engaged performance.
