Call for Participants: PSi Summer School #4.33

23rd August – 1st October 2021

Attentions and Attunements

The Future Advisory Board welcomes applications to this year’s Summer School, taking place over six weeks around the topic of ‘Attentions and Attunements.’

Since the inaugural meeting, the Future Advisory Board has positioned the Summer School as an internal to PSi conferences, focusing on the space between each annual conference and the connections, overlaps and dissonances between conference themes. As a result of the cancellation of this year’s Rijeka conference, and a consequence of the unfolding global pandemic, this year’s Summer School continues a durational format established last year, and forms part of PSi’s Constellate,<https://www.psi-web.org/constellate/?fbclid=IwAR3A3p4S6Rxfj7CYqp7gJPXGXGnf5uJ0XO4930LdNze2d7PVoPkHiszKWiE> a distributed and evolving virtual program taking place between March and October 2021

Eligibility for Summer School

  * Current graduate students, recent PhD graduates (last 3-5 years) including post-doctoral researchers and junior faculty, independent scholars and artists are welcome to apply.

#4.33 Attentions and Attunements

This year, we maintain the interval not as a fissure or dissonance, but as a bridging, dialoguing with the themes of Crises of Care: act respond engage (PSi #26 Rijeka) and On Slowness (FAB Summer School #3.33) to explore attentions and attunements in relation to pressing issues in performance studies. Maintaining the odd interval emergent with last year’s Summer School, we continue to explore the never quite complete, the fractional and ever continuing, looking to the Summer School as an intermission as well as extension.

Attentions and Attunements will make space to consider responsibility and response-ability to global crises and disciplinary concerns; relational ethics and cultural safety and care; procedures of listening and choreographies of attention; movements between reaction and activation; diverse localisms and power relations in and through performance studies.

Duration and format

Summer School #4.33 will take place online through a series of synchronous and asynchronous events, following last year’s format of weekly creative and critical prompts. The six week model provides a decompressed mode of learning, gathering, collaboration and connection to limit fatigue and engage in slow processes and features a number of guest presenters. The Summer School aims to foster a collaborative, sustainable environment for conversation, creativity and critical inquiry and to pay attention together to how our fields, research and practices are entangled with the current moment and its futurities. Participants are invited to engage with the wider PSi Constellate programme.

Priority acceptance will be given to those committed to the duration of the Summer School.

Access

We anticipate the Summer School will require a minimum of two hours weekly commitment, though we hope that participants will engage in self-directed activities and micro-projects while collaborating with the summer’s cohort. We encourage participants to connect outside of pre-set times to gather and discuss.

We will try and ensure that meeting times are not centered on one particular time zone, and will seek to provide at least two options for weekly synchronous participation.

FAB welcomes diversity in its applicants and seeks to be as inclusive as possible. Please let us know if you have further access needs in your application.
