The Theatre and Performance program at the University of Waterloo is searching for an instructor for our Theatre History course (THPERF 371) which will be offered in the spring term (May - August) of 2023. This course may focus on any context of world theatre history from a pre-modern period to the end of the nineteenth century. Course content should pay close attention to surviving documentary evidence of theatre practice, taking account of its value as evidence; its historical, social, political, and aesthetic contexts; and its relationships to at least one significant theatre work from the same period. This is one of three courses devoted to the research of theatre practice that our program offers, the other two courses focus on performance theory and the analysis of modern theatre history. For many of the students taking this course, the study of pre-modern theatre history will be new.

In the spring term of 2023, this course will be taught online, with an overall capacity of up to 70 students. If the number of students in this course exceeds 50, the successful candidate for this position will have access to a TA. There is an option of a 90-minute synchronous class meeting time.

The contract is a sessional teaching contract ($8,910) over the 4-month term. The instructor will be responsible for:

  * developing the syllabus, based on the learning outcomes supplied by the program,
  *   leading classes in person,
  * supplying reading/viewing materials for the students,
  * marking assignments, offering constructive feedback, and grading the students.
