African Americans in American Presidential Politics

Since the nineteenth century, the role of African Americans in
presidential elections has changed dramatically. In this talk, Andrew
Hunt, will explore the evolution of black participation in presidential
elections, from the post-Civil War years to the post-Civil Rights era.
It will begin with African Americans who were enfranchised for the first
time after years of enslavement and conclude with the candidacy of the
first African American presidential nominee of a major political party,
Senator Barack Obama.
