A Short History of the Sexes

Shannon Dea, Assistant Professor, Philosophy

How many human sexes are there?

Most people would answer "two" without hesitation. However, historically,
there has been and continues to be disagreement about this question. For
centuries, females were considered degenerate or underdeveloped males rather
than members of their own sex. On this view, there is really only one
biological sex, but individuals typify that sex to a greater or lesser
degree. In recent centuries, matters changed.

Based on her popular Gender Issues course (Philosophy 202), Shannon Deawill
sketch the history and arguments at play in the sex debate, and will connect
them with some fundamental (and perennial) philosophical questions.

Thank you ..... Marie
