JOINT SYMPOSIUM ON ROBOTICS RESEARCH:
CHIBA UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
Date: Monday, May 16th, 2011

Please join us for a joint one hour symposium on robotics by researchers on both sides of the Pacific, from Chiba University in Japan and from the University of Waterloo. Four 15 minute talks will cover a broad range of robotics topics, including the latest news concerning Japan's Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Crisis - how robots helped and how you can help.
Professor Kenzo Nonami - Chiba University Vice President for Research and International Affairs. Overview of his labs which create unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), unmanned surface vehicles, manipulator arms, electric vehicles, flywheel energy storage system, harvesting vehicles, and wind power generation with flywheel energy storage systems.
Professor Wenwei Yu - Overview of his research in medical engineering at Chiba University including assistive technology, home healthcare robotics, and assistive surgery robots.
Professor Steven Waslander - Overview of the many robotics related research projects going on at the University of Waterloo, including aerial and ground vehicles, autonomous navigation and mapping technologies with applications to surveillance, inspection and monitoring.
Professor Mark Haley - Discussion of robots that worked and failed in Japan's current earthquake crisis, a description of the current situation at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plants, the earthquake and tsunami and how robots are being used to help. Prof. Haley will also describe Chiba's Multi-Career Program which provides career opportunities and internships for PhDs and postdoctoral researchers at Chiba University.
