Dear colleagues,
I am writing to inform you about a brand-new course, "Science and Citizens"
(PHIL 271), being offered in the winter 2012 term by Dr. Carla Fehr, the
Department of Philosophy''s new Wolfe Chair in Science and Technology
Studies. This course will examine when, and to what degree, citizens are
justified in trusting science. PHIL 271 is appropriate both for students
with science backgrounds and for those without.
Dr. Fehr is a founder of ISU ADVANCE, a $3.5 million National Science
Foundation Institutional Transformation Grant designed to test strategies
for improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women and
under represented minority faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. She has
primary research publications in Biology, Women’s Studies, and the Social
Sciences, as well as in Philosophy. Her research rests at the intersection
of Philosophy of Biology, Social Epistemology and Feminist Science Studies,
and involves the relationships between social values and excellent
scientific practice. Dr. Fehr was Iowa State University’s 2002 Jerry
Shakeshaft Master Teacher in Humanities and Social Sciences, and holds two
awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
I am attaching a flyer for the new course. Please share it with any of your
students who might be interested.
Best wishes,
Shannon Dea
