presented by Prof. James L. Kugel

Walking in the Valley of the Shadow of Death:
A Biblical Scholar's Journey with Cancer

TEN YEARS AGO, Harvard professor James Kugel was diagnosed with an aggressive, likely fatal, form of cancer. Kugel will discuss his book In the Valley of the Shadow, which is a wide-ranging exploration of different aspects of religion, interspersed with his personal reflections on the course of his own illness. Kugel seeks to uncover what he calls the starting point of religious consciousness, "an ancient sense of self" and a way of fitting into the world that is quite at odds with the usual one.

James Kugel, is the Starr Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Literature at Harvard University and the best selling author of How to Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture, Then and Now as well as a dozen other books and scores of research articles. He is also the Director of the Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible in Israel.
