The English Department's newest Shakespeare class, ENGL 290: Global Shakespeare, will be offered in Winter 2012. The class considers how the global study of Shakespeare has become the location of a multicultural dialogue, with playwrights, novelists, and filmmakers from many cultures adapting Shakespeare's plays for purposes of their own. Writers studied include Derek Walcott, Wole Soyinka, Jane Smiley, Akira Kurosawa, and Canada's Djanet Sears; The Tempest, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and King Lear will also be read. The class will meet Tuesday and Thursdays, 2:30-3:50, and fulfills a requirement in the English Literature in a Global Context Specialization.
