Guest Lecture

Tuesday, November 22nd, 4:30 p.m. in PAS 1229

 

 "Unpacking the Loss of the Healthy Immigrant Effect: A Contribution from
Anthropology"

 

Dr. Denise L. Spitzer 

Canada Research Chair in Gender, Migration and Health

Institute of Women's Studies, University of Ottawa

Most immigrants come to Canada healthier than the average Canadian, but lose
that health advantage after residing in the country for more than ten years.
What contributes to the deterioration of health status? Are all newcomers
equally affected? Dr. Spitzer will provide an overview of the loss of the
healthy immigrant effect, and then, drawing on more than a decade of
research with immigrants in Canada, will describe how work, weariness and
worry underpin this erosion of health status.


	
		
 


Dr. Spitzer is interested in how global processes-intersecting with gender,
ethnicity, migration status and other social identifiers-are implicated in
health and well being.  Her current research focuses on immigrant and
refugee women and engages with critical perspectives of the body,
transnationalism and identity, the impact of policy on health, agency and
social support, community-based research, and gender and diversity-based
analysis.
