About the book:
Sound in the Lands: Mennonite Music Across Borders is a collection of  
essays drawn from the proceedings of the second Sound in the Lands  
festival and conference, hosted by Conrad Grebel University College in  
June 2009.  A sequel to the first Sound in the Land conference and  
essay collection, Sound in the Lands: Mennonite Music Across Borders  
re-evaluates the meaning of “Mennonite music” in various contemporary  
global settings, including work by leading Mennonite writers,  
composers, and musicians.  Representing a broad range of disciplinary  
approaches and personal perspectives, these essays challenge readers  
to consider how Mennonite music-making is enriched by an interplay of  
historical circumstances, varying traditions, and cross-cultural  
experiences.  Like its predecessor in 2004, Sound in the Lands 2009  
brought together musicians, academics, writers, and artists for a four- 
day feast of performances, formal paper presentations, workshops, and  
poetry readings in a vibrant environment of shared music and dialogue.  
The essays published here represent a sampling of papers presented at  
the conference and demonstrate some of the richness of conversation  
encountered by participants.  The book is published by Pandora Press,  
Kitchener.
