A Biblical Scholar's Walk in the Valley of the Shadow of Death

TEN YEARS AGO, Harvard professor James Kugel was diagnosed with an aggressive, likely fatal, form of
cancer. Kugel will discuss his book In the Valley of the Shadow, which is a wide-ranging exploration of different
aspects of religion, interspersed with his personal reflections on the course of his own illness. Kugel seeks to
uncover what he calls the starting point of religious consciousness, "an ancient sense of self" and a way of
fitting into the world that is quite at odds with the usual one.

JAMES KUGEL was born in New York. From 1982-2003 he was Starr Professor of Hebrew Literature at
Harvard University and is a world renowned scholar of the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, . He
is now Director of the Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible at Bar Ilan University in Israel, Kugel is
the author of some sixty research articles and eleven books.

"Awesome, thrilling, and strange..." New York Times
"A powerful hybrid of memoir, scholarship, and speculation...an unflinching look at that greatest
of mysteries, our own death." --Commonwealth
