When: Tuesday, November 13, 2012 from 5:00 - 6:20 p.m.
Where: EV3, Room 4412 (the new Environment Building)
Guest Speaker: Dr. Susan Pfeiffer, Anthropology Department, University of Toronto
Lecture Title & Synopsis: "Decades of Dialogue: International and Local Perspectives on Repatriation"
Around the world, the transfer of responsibility for heritage materials is being shifted to descendant groups in many different ways. Repatriation includes, but is not limited to, the reburial of archaeologically-derived human remains. Approaches in the USA, South Africa and Kenya will be compared with those used in Canada. The Canadian setting is unique, offering considerable latitude to all parties, hence requiring commitment to meaningful dialogue. Using current activities at University of Toronto as a framework, the speaker will optimistically assert that some repatriation processes have been foundational to significant societal goals.
