The Religious Studies Department invites you to the following talk:
Race, Religion and U.S. Immigration Today
The Political Integration of Indian Americans
Dr. Prema Kurien
Maxwell School of Syracuse University
This talk focuses on the political mobilization of Indian Americans and contributes to understanding the political incorporation of U.S. immigrants by examining how first- and second-generation immigrants mobilize advocacy organizations around ethnic, pan-ethnic, religious, and party-oriented identities. It also reveals how race and religion interact in complex ways to shape the political integration of immigrants.
Prema Kurien, professor of sociology and director of the Asian/Asian American Studies Program at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, is the author of two award-winning books, Kaleidoscopic Ethnicity: International Migration and the Reconstruction of Community Identities in India, and A Place at the Multicultural Table: The Development of an American Hinduism.
