REMINDER of our lecture series presentation this Monday, March 18th.

Please see below more details on the presentation:

Focusing on three films from the first decade of the 21st century that appeal to global audiences -Kamchatka (2002), Machuca (2004) and O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias [The Year My Parents Went On Vacation] (2006)- "The Innocent Eye: Children's Perspectives on the Utopias of the Seventies" frames this study with relevant theoretical concepts. The three films share a main rhetorical device: a young male protagonist, who recalls the story of his parents' experiences during the period of leftist politics and military takeover the 1960s and 1970s. In all three cases, the child/adolescent protagonist is emplotted within the conventions of the narrative genre of Bildungsroman along with certain features of style and iconicity that elicit a comparative analysis. These national films operate within the new parameters of transnational practices of production, distribution and consumption, producing high quality entertainment and technical artistry within conventional cinematographic genres, styles and images. The hypothesis put forward contends that the child's eye view technique, which has several advantages in terms of aesthetic and psychological possibilities, is used to re-create the time and place of those tragic years of fratricide in national histories, in an unproblematic fashion, making that traumatic period more palatable for transnational and national audiences.

I very much hope to see you there.

With kind regards,
Emma
