Join us on Monday at 1:30 in HH 117 for a public lecture as part of our History Speaker Series!
Prof. Ben Shoenmaker from Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute of Military History will present "Who needs fair weather friends?: The Dutch contribution to UN Peacekeeping".
Why do countries participate in peacekeeping operations? The answer to this question is not as obvious as it may seem, not in the Dutch case at least. Ben Schoenmaker will discuss the often complex and sometimes contradictory motives of the Dutch government to take part in UN peacekeeping operations. He will focus on two major contributions, the one to UNIFIL in Lebanon, the other to UNPROFOR in Bosnia. The decision to take part in UNIFIL was mainly driven by a rather calculated wish to gain international prestige, whereas in the case of UNPROFOR moral indignation seemed to be the main motive. What both missions have common, however, is that for the Dutch they became major disappointments, twice forcing the government to conclude: "Never again!".
