Brought to you by the 2014 Silver Medal and Iris Yuzdepski Memorial Graduate Award<https://uwaterloo.ca/anthropology/events/2014-silver-medal-and-iris-yuzdepski-memorial-graduate-award> presentations:

The Department of Anthropology is pleased to invite you to a guest lecture<https://uwaterloo.ca/anthropology/events/2014-silver-medal-and-iris-yuzdepski-memorial-graduate-award> by Dr. About Farman from the Anthropology Department at Princeton University:

"The Eschatological Gap: Cryonics, Biotechnology and the Time of Life in the Secular."

Friday March 28, 2014 4:00-5:30 p.m. EV3 4412

Dr. Farman's research interests include secularism and religion, death, science and technology, and post-secular aesthetics. His lecture explores cryonics, analyzing the ways in which the ability to stop and start life is conditioned, and reconfiguring the secular imaginaries of finitude. "Neither dead nor alive, the cryopreserved figure is considered to be a patient, a 'future person' with potential bio-viability beyond the age of the universe."

Prior to the lecture, the Silver Medal<https://uwaterloo.ca/anthropology/current-undergraduates/silver-medal-award> for Academic Excellence of a fourth year Undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology will be presented to Alana Armas. The Iris Yuzdepski Memorial Graduate Award will be presented to an Anthropology Graduate student for outstanding academic achievement.

The lecture is free, No RSVP is necessary, and all are welcome to attend! For more information about the Department of Anthropology today, please visit our website<https://uwaterloo.ca/anthropology/>.
