On behalf of the Canadian Bioethics Society's second annual National Health Ethics Week<http://www.bioethics.ca/2015ethicsweekevents>, Christopher Lowry (Assistant Professor) & Andria Bianchi (PhD student) of the Department of Philosophy<https://uwaterloo.ca/philosophy/events/national-health-ethics-week-event> will be presenting a talk on March 6, 2015 at 3:30 pm in HH 373.
"Makayla's Choice: Ethics and the Aboriginal Right to Pursue Traditional Medicine"

Christopher Lowry
Assistant Professor, Philosophy
The court ruling involving J.J. explains well why there is an aboriginal right to pursue traditional medicine. It also states that "such a right cannot be qualified as a right only if it is proven to work by employing the western medical paradigm." That might seem to be at odds with the Supreme Court's view that aboriginal rights can be limited in order to prevent harm to others. I will try to get a clearer view of the ethical questions this apparent conflict raises.

Andria Bianchi
PhD student, Philosophy
Eleven-year-old Makayla Sault died on January 19th, 2015 after she was legally permitted to stop chemotherapy and pursue alternative treatment for leukemia at the Hippocrates Health Institute (HHI). Should Makayla's autonomy have been restricted? Should we restrict the future autonomy of Canadians by disallowing the HHI from treating our citizens? This paper will explore these questions.
