hmmm.... so AA is a co PI "for a study of Canadian foreign fighters at the University of Waterloo". Really? a study of foreign fighters who are at Waterloo? Perhaps the RCMP should be called? Or our own Police Dept?

What is ISIS? Why do Canadians Join?

Date: Thursday, March 19, 3:30-5:00, with questions to follow.
Location: AL 211

Dr. Lorne Dawson, Sociology and Legal Studies, UW and Dr. Amarnath Amarasingam, Dalhousie University

In the last two years there has been much discussion in the media about "foreign fighters,” who have chosen to travel to Northern Africa and the Middle East to fight in conflicts that do not directly involve their countries. We will examine some of their life stories, push and pull factors, and ask a simple
question: what makes them do it?

The presentation will put a very human face to those willing to accept the ultimate sacrifice to perpetrate very inhumane and dehumanizing acts.

Lorne Dawson is a Professor in Sociology and Legal Studies at University of Waterloo, he is the Co-Director of the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society, and the co-editor of Religious Radicalization and Securitization in Canada and Beyond.

Amarnath Amarasingam is Postdoctoral Fellow at Dalhousie University and the Co-Principle Investigator for a study of Canadian foreign fighters based at the University of Waterloo.

Refreshments will be served
Sponsored by the University of Waterloo Department of Religious Studies.
