Animals as peers, as persons and peacebuilders.

Abstract:

In this talk Bechtel considers some of the changes that have developed in human understanding of animal life over the last 20 years. In three circles of increasing particularity he probes the ways humans and animals relate and the lessons that humans can take from animal life. Drawing on insights from geography, theology, and ethology Bechtel develops an ethics of human-animal relationship focused on the flourishing of species.

Speaker Biography:

Trevor Bechtel is Dean of Conrad Grebel University College and Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Theological Studies at the University of Waterloo. His research interests include the human animal relationship, theology and technology and biblical interpretation.   He is the author of The Gift of Ethics.
